Optica Names Carney Chief Scientific and Technology Officer

The Optical Society (OSA) appointed P. Scott Carney as chief scientific and technology officer. Carney will coordinate technical activity across the organization, including shaping the scientific strategy for meetings, leading advocacy efforts, and providing science- and technology-focused advice as a member of the executive team.

Among other contributions, Carney, an OSA fellow, served as general chair of OSA’s 100th Annual Meeting in 2016, holding the editor-in-chief post for the Journal of the Optical Society of America A (JOSA A) and supporting the OSA Foundation Siegman International School on Lasers.

Carney was professor of optics and director of the Institute of Optics at the University of Rochester. Before his time at the institute, he was interim founding director of the Innovation, Leadership, and Engineering Entrepreneurship degree program and a professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. His industry experience includes co-founding Diagnostic Photonics Inc. and serving as a board member and chief scientific officer. His accomplishments have been recognized as a Fulbright Fellow, recipient of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy William F. Meggers Award, and other honors. He has authored and presented more than 120 technical papers and holds multiple patents.

Carney is a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. He is also a member of APS, IEEE, and SPIE.
