CyberOptics Acquiring 3-D Metrology Firm
Sensors and inspection systems maker CyberOptics Inc. is acquiring Laser Design Inc. (LDI), a 3-D metrology company also based in Minneapolis, for $3 million in cash, CyberOptics said Tuesday.
CyberOptics provides systems that improve process yield and throughput in the electronic assembly and semiconductor capital equipment markets.
"The pending acquisition of LDI is part of a strategic repositioning of CyberOptics as a high-precision 3-D sensor technology company," said CyberOptics executive chairman Dr. Subodh Kulkarni. "Global demand for 3-D scanning is growing rapidly as this technology is deployed increasingly in markets ranging from automotive and aerospace to medical and consumer electronics."
With revenues of approximately $6 million, LDI provides scanning systems and services to the estimated $825 million global 3-D scanner and services metrology market. Its industrial customers include Schneider Electric, Samsung, HP, Toyota, Hyundai and General Dynamics.
"The addition of LDI also will enable CyberOptics to leverage the 3-D sensor technology that we are developing in-house. We intend to incorporate the new 3-D sensor technology into future LDI products to strengthen their competitiveness in the growing 3-D scanning market," Kulkarni said.
The transaction is expected to close in February, pending approval by LDI's shareholders. LDI, which initially will be operated as a wholly owned subsidiary, is expected to have a minimal impact on CyberOptics' consolidated bottom line performance in 2014, the company said.
