Bodkin Design Wins Hyperspectral Imager Contract

Bodkin Design & Engineering LLC, under a $150,000 US Air Force contract, will develop a high-spatial-resolution hyperspectral sensor prototype operating in the long-wave infrared spectral band.

The nine-month Small Business Innovation Research program was awarded to Bodkin Design as part of the Air Force Research Laboratory’s ongoing efforts to improve target acquisition and threat assessment. Compared with conventional imaging, hyperspectral imaging provides more accurate detection of materials and objects, along with hundreds of colors per image, instead of just three. It combines the spatial image with spectral analysis to build up a three-dimensional data cube.

Several methods are currently available for acquiring hyperspectral images, but they have been limited in their ability to meet the military’s needs for speed, accuracy and data rate. Bodkin Design’s new device will capture spectral and spatial information with unprecedented data-cube size and speed to improve standoff target detection, materials identification and the quantification of atmospheric constituents and effluents.
