Latest Research, Technologies Slated for SPIE Optics + Photonics 2015

SPIE Optics + Photonics 2015, to be held Aug. 9-13 in San Diego, is the largest international, multidisciplinary optical sciences and technology meeting in North America, featuring the latest research in optical engineering and applications, sustainable energy, nanotechnology, organic photonics and astronomical instrumentation. The annual event focuses specifically on advancing nanoscience, optical engineering, organic photonics, and sustainable energy research.

There are 3,300 presentations to be presented in the areas of Nanoscience + Engineering, covering nanophotonic materials, graphene, optical trapping, thin films, nanostructured devices, nanoimaging, nanospectroscopy, and 2D and low-dimensional materials; Optics + Photonics for Sustainable Energy, covering photovoltaics, thin film solar technology and next generation cell technology; Organic Photonics + Electronics, covering OLEDs, OFETS, OPVs, organic sensors and liquid crystals; Optical Engineering + Applications, covering optical design and engineering, optomechanics and optical fabrication, photonic devices and applications, image and signal processing, astronomical optics and instrumentation and remote sensing.

More than 4,400 researchers, developers, suppliers, and other industry professionals are expected to attend.

The conference features displays, presentations, workshops and an exhibition, as well as an opportunity to vote on the 32 images vying for the People's Choice Award in the SPIE IYL Photo Contest.

A three-day industry exhibition will be held during the conference, showcasing optical components, detectors and sensors, test and analysis equipment and more. There will also be an extensive professional development program, a job fair, numerous technical and networking events, and leadership training and other activities for students.

Nearly 20 plenary sessions will feature researchers and scientists, including Nader Engheta, a professor of electrical and systems engineering at the University of Pennsylvania, who will discuss Sculpting Waves; Extreme Imaging and Beyond will be presented by Keisuke Goda, a professor of physical chemistry at the University of Tokyo; Wyatt Metzger, of the National Renewable Energy Lab, will discuss the Status and Challenges of CdTe Photovoltaics; Kyushu University professor Chihaya Adachi will offer information on the Current Status of High Efficiency OLEDs Based on Delayed Fluorescence; and Aydogan Ozcan, a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles and associate director of the California NanoSystems Institute, will discuss Democratization of Next-Generation Imaging, Sensing and Diagnostics Tools Through Computational Photonics.

There will also be numerous program tracks offered — Nanoscience, Nanoengineering, Illumination Engineering, Optomechanics and Optical Manufacturing, Optical Design and Systems Engineering, Signal, Image and Data Processing, Astronomical Optics and Instrumentation, Remote Sensing, Atmospheric and Space Optical Systems, Optics + Photonics for Sustainable Energy, Detectors and Imaging, Metrology, Professional Development, and Workshops for Optics Educators — under which a variety of courses will be held. Among them: Probability for Systems Engineers, Physical Optics Designs, Gradient Index (GRIN) Optical Design, Specifying and Mitigating Laser Damage, and Wavefront Data Analysis.
