Laser World of Photonics China:
Manufacturing, System Processing in Focus

JUSTINE MURPHY, SENIOR EDITOR, justine.murphy@photonics.com

Robotics, laser processing and machine vision are boosting the manufacturing sector with more intelligent and precise systems. Their advancement is among photonics technologies taking top billing at the 2018 Laser World of Photonics China, to be held March 14-16 at the Shanghai New International Expo Center.

This annual event is touted Asia’s leading laser, optics and photonics trade fair, encompassing research and industry sectors.

Laser World of Photonics China is held in parallel with Photonics Congress China, and offers forums, conferences, panel discussions, and product and applications demonstrations, in addition to hundreds of exhibitors from around the world. Conferences and sessions held within the event include the 13th International Laser Processing and Systems Conference (LPC 2018). It will focus on topics including ultrafast laser technology and applications; laser monitoring system technology for welding, cutting and machining; and laser process simulation and modelling.

The Chinese Laser Market Summit 2018 will feature a number of speakers. Among them are John Ambroseo, president and CEO of Coherent Inc.; Hartmut Zefferer, global sales director at Trumpf; and Yan Dapeng, vice chairman and chief engineer at Wuhan Raycus Laser Inc. Discussion topics include an overview and forecast of the laser markets in China and abroad, fiber and diode laser development and future trends, as well as the advantages of picosecond UV lasers in microprocessing, and developments and trends of the semiconductor lasers in China.

Organized by the Chinese Laser Press and Messe München International, the Optics Frontier: 13th National Conference on Laser Technology and Optoelectronics (LTO 2018) will offer 12 sessions — laser physics and technology; advanced solid-state and novel lasers; semiconductor lasers and advanced optoelectronic devices; advanced laser materials, films and components, and optical fiber and devices; modulation, transmission and application of optical fields; laser manufacturing technology; biomedical photonics; space laser communication and lidar; infrared technology; quantum optics; terahertz technology; and machine vision.

Optical Made in China 2025 is an international academic event that brings together people in the manufacturing, training, research and practical applications fields. This summit will focus on optical free-form surface and micro-structure array surface manufacturing technology, in addition to hot topics in modern smart optical manufacturing engineering and scientific research. This technology and its applications are boosting development of consumer electronics, imaging, LED lighting, homeland security, medical equipment, new energy and computer technology.

A Workshop on Safety of Industrial Lasers and Systems Use, organized by the Chinese Optical Society Laser Processing Committee and Messe München International, is designed for laser product and quality managers, as well as equipment integrators and technical engineers. Issues of focus range from laser safety standards to laser system production workshop safety.

A Fiber Laser Training session will be presented by Xiaolin Wang, an associate researcher at the National University of Defense Technology in China. An operation and product demonstration — led by Chen Shi, assistant researcher at the National Defense University, and Lei Duan, a senior engineer at the Institute of Software, Chinese Academy of Sciences — will highlight the features, modules, methods of operation and case presentation of a fiber laser tool kit and fiber laser simulation software.

The China (Shanghai) International Machine Vision Technology and Application Conference will be held during Laser World of Photonics China, as well. With a focus on machine vision and artificial intelligence, it will feature speakers representing both academia and industry, hailing from organizations such as FLIR Systems, Ritsumeikan University in Japan, Chromasens and MVTec Software. The Infrared Thermal Imaging Conference will focus on the latest developments in infrared materials, devices and equipment, as well as potential applications in industrial process control, quality inspection, security, machine vision and robotics. Presenters will also discuss current market and development trends.

The Laser World of Photonics China exhibition featured nearly 1000 companies from more than 20 countries in 2017, and is expected to at least match that this year. The event is broken into numerous sectors: lasers and optoelectronics; optics; manufacturing technology for optics; sensors, test and measurement and optical measurement systems; imaging; laser systems for production engineering; optical information and communication; biophotonics and medical engineering; illumination and energy; and security.

Among companies exhibiting in 2018 are PCO, Shanghai SG Image Technology, Raylase Laser Technology Shenzhen, Laser Quantum, Scanlab, Spectra-Physics, Mitutoyo Measuring Instruments Shanghai, Teledyne e2v, Beijing Laserwave Optoelectronics, Optton Corp., Avantes China, JM Vistec, LMI Technologies Inc., Advanced Fiber Resources (Zhuhai), and Basler Asia.
