Hastie Named Director of Strathclyde’s Institute of Photonics: People in the News: 05/11/22

The University of Strathclyde appointed Jennifer Hastie as director of its Institute of Photonics. Hastie was previously the institute’s deputy director and has worked there since joining as a doctoral student in 2000. She succeeds Keith Mathieson, Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Emerging Technologies at Strathclyde. Hastie will be supported in the new post by deputy director Nicolas Laurand and director of research Martin Dawson.

CORK, Ireland — Denis Doyle was appointed chair of the board at Tyndall National Institute. He will lead the board’s oversight of the future development and expansion of Ireland’s flagship research institute in integrated information communications technology hardware and systems at University College Cork. Doyle previously served in various roles at Analog Devices International, including as vice president and general manager of U.S. and Irish manufacturing operations.

BOULDER, Colo. — ColdQuanta, a developer and manufacturer of instruments and systems for quantum technologies applications, named Neil Anderson general manager of quantum components. Anderson will be responsible for defining and executing strategy related to the company’s portfolio of quantum devices and machines. Anderson is taking over leadership of the division from interim general manager Sandi Mays.

JENA, Germany — Hans-Dieter Schumacher, CFO of JENOPTIK AG, will leave the company at the expiration of his current executive board contract in March 2023. Schumacher joined the company as CFO in April 2015, having previously served at HOMAG Group. Before that he served as CFO of construction material manufacturer Sto AG.

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Velodyne Lidar appointed Mark Weinswig CFO. He succeeds Drew Hamer, who will transition from the company in advance of pursuing career opportunities later this year. Weinswig has more than 25 years of strategic and operational experience in technology companies.

BRATTLEBORO, Vt. — Debbie Gustafson has been named to Omega Optical Holdings’ board of directors. She has more than 35 years of experience in the photonics industry, with companies including Teradyne, Entegris, and Energetiq Technology.

FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J. — BD (Becton, Dickinson, and Co.), a medical technology company, named the inaugural members of the BD Scientific Advisory Board. Members include John DeFord, Claire Fraser, Martha Gray, Eric Perakslis, Ken Sands, and Jay Schnitzer. The board will advise BD on the company’s technology capabilities; innovation pipeline; merger and acquisition opportunities; early-stage investments; emerging trends in health care, science, and technology; and the potential implications for BD.

FOOTHILL RANCH, Calif. — Dental laser company BIOLASE elected Kenneth Yale, Kathleen O’Loughlin, Carol Gomez Summerhays, and Martha Somerman to its board of directors. Yale serves on the board of visitors at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry and serves as a consultant to the Department of Defense. Previously he has served as chief clinical officer at Delta Dental, vice president of clinical solutions and medical director of Aetna, CEO of UnitedHealth Group, and corporate vice president of Matria Healthcare and CorSolutions. He also served as chief of staff of the White House Office of Science and Technology and as executive director of the White House Domestic Policy Council.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Promex Industries — a provider of advanced design, packaging, and microelectronics assembly services — hired Chip Greely as its vice president of engineering. Greely previously served as director of new product introductions for Nokia America and has served in various roles at companies including Qualcomm, GE, and Amphenol.

DRONFIELD, England — AMETEK Land — a manufacturer of monitors and analyzers for industrial infrared noncontact temperature measurement, combustion efficiency, and environmental pollutant emissions — appointed David Primhak director for sales and project management. The company also appointed three others to regional director positions. Anthony Kirkham is director of sales for Europe and Africa. Shyh Huah Tay is director of sales for Asia. And Larry Smith is director of sales for the Americas.
