Coherent Expands with Purchase of Finnish Wafer Processor Stock

In a move to expand its capabilities and market share in the semiconductor laser industry, Coherent Inc. of Santa Clara, Calif., has acquired 80 percent of the outstanding shares of Finnish epitaxial-wafer producer Tutcore OY Ltd. Coherent also has the option to purchase Tutcore's remaining shares in the future. Coherent officers said that the Tutcore acquisition is key to the company's goal of becoming a leading supplier of high-quality laser diodes for telecommunications, materials processing, medical and solid-state laser pumping applications.
