ALLENTOWN, Penn., Nov. 1 -- Agere Systems will provide its wireless platform for use in global system for mobile (GSM) communications cellular phone handsets. Nearly 70 percent of the world's cell phones are based on the GSM standard.

Beijing, China-based PTIC Capitel is using Agere's semiconductor and software system-level platform in the company's new C6088 and C6288 models, which Capitel started selling a few weeks ago in China, one of the world's largest and fastest-growing GSM cell phone markets. The handsets are about 30 percent smaller than a business card and weigh about 2.4 ounces.
