Sony Leads Effort to Capture DVD Market
Sony has once again decided to break ranks with competing electronics companies by leading an effort to develop standards for digital video discs. More than a decade ago, the company failed in its effort to establish its Betamax videocassette recorder standards. Once again Sony is taking on its competitors by developing a disc with 3 GB per side. A 10-company consortium led by
Matsushita has begun developing 2.6-GB discs.
