Lucent to Supply Korean Optical System
SEOUL, Korea, July 31 -- Lucent Technologies saidit has been awarded a contract to supply KT with an advanced optical system that will quadruple the capacity of its existing networks. The system will be the first major introduction of 10-gigabit technology to South Korea's largest communications service provider's long-distance transmission networks.
Lucent will deliver 25 WaveStar TDM 10G (STM-64) systems by the end of September to upgrade KT's current 2.5 gigabit-based city-to-city networks in Gyunggi, Chungcheong, Jeonra and Gangwon province to 10G capacity-based networks. The commercial service is scheduled to start this November.
"Lucent has supplied various kinds of optical networking systems to KT for many years," said John Yang, president and chief executive officer, Lucent Technologies Korea. "This project from KT, following last September's award to supply dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) and synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) equipment, demonstrates Lucent's commitment to deliver more 10G optical transmission systems for future growth as well as enhancing our already strong presence in the Korean optical networking market".
