Companies Cross-License Optical Transceiver Technology

Finisar Corp., a provider of fiber optic subsystems for high-speed data networks, and Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd., a supplier of optical fiber, cable and components for the telecom industry, have agreed to cross-license certain intellectual properties in fiber optic transceivers that each company owns.

Covered in the agreement are issued or pending Finisar patents applicable to small-form-factor pluggable transceiver modules, which are designed for communications applications of up to OC-48 speeds.

Finisar patents for digital diagnostic technology that provides calibrated, real-time measurements of the laser bias current, the transmitted and received optical power, and the internal transceiver temperature and supply voltage are also licensed to Sumitomo. In return, Finisar has access to several of Sumitomo's patents in the optical transceiver field.
