Defense Agency Employs Fiberstars' Lighting Technology
The Defense Advanced Research Project Agency is using a fiber optic lighting system from Fiberstars Inc. of Fremont, Calif., as a base technology for the development of high-efficiency distributed lighting under its HEDLight program. The purpose of the project is to enable advances in platform survivability, energy efficiency, safety and maintenance -- particularly on naval warships -- through the use of remote-source lighting. Fiberstars says its EFO system delivers the approximate equivalent of 300 W from conventional incandescent or halogen bulbs while consuming only 75 W, an efficiency gain of 400 percent.
