Cubic Wins $12 Million Laser Contract

SAN DIEGO, Calif., Dec. 30 -- Cubic Corp. has won a contract valued at $12 million to supply its laser-based combat training system to the US Army.

Tec-Masters Inc., of Huntsville, Ala., awarded the contract to Cubic Defense Applications under its contract with the Army's Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training and Instrumentation. The purpose of the award is to support a Stryker brigade rotation from Fort Lewis, Wash., to the Joint Readiness Training Center at Fort Polk, La.

Cubic's multiple integrated laser engagement system (MILES) allows troops to fire laser infrared "bullets" from the same weapons and vehicles they would use in actual combat. Deliveries of the MILES equipment will begin next February and last through April 2003. The shipments will include helmets and torso vests equipped with laser detectors, and small arms transmitters designed for mounting on rifles, machine guns and heavy machine guns. Cubic will also deliver a quantity of controller devices to be used in training.
