Universal Display to Develop Metal Foil for LED Displays

The US Army has awarded Universal Display Corp. of Ewing, N.J., a $69,850 Phase I Small Business Innovation Research contract to develop a flexible active-matrix, organic LED display on durable, thin metal foil for use in military applications. The company's top-emission organic LED technology enables using the opaque metal substrate rather than the transparent substrates commonly used in this type of display. Use of the metal foil may also step up the development of flexible, polysilicon thin-film transistor backplanes, which may expedite the commercialization of the displays.
