Report: Diagnostic Imaging Product Markets on Rise

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., Feb. 25 -- The global market for diagnostic imaging equipment, which encompasses computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), nuclear medicine imaging, ultrasonography and conventional X-ray-based systems, totaled over $14.5 billion in 2002 and is projected to reach nearly $16.5 billion in system sales by 2006, according to a new report by Medtech Insight, "The Worldwide Market for Diagnostic Imaging Equipment."

Ultrasound and traditional X-rays are the most frequently performed imaging tests, and together they account for more than 50 percent of the worldwide imaging market, and sales of diagnostic imaging equipment in the US, Europe and Japan account for more than 80 percent, according to the report.

Technologies detailed in the report include cardiac single-photon emission CT; echocardiography; electron beam, multi-slice, and spiral CT; functional MRI; general radiology and fluoroscopy; MR angiography; mammography; positron emission tomography; proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy; and 3-D and contrast-enhanced ultrasound.
