Long Beach Gains Broadband Via Gas Lines
ATLANTA, April 1 -- The city of Long Beach, Calif., has chosen OFS's DuctSaver FX cable to be installed in a mile of natural gas lines in order to provide a fiber optic-based communications system among several buildings.
The fiber-in-gas technology, created by Sempra Fiber Links, will enable the system to be installed inside a pipeline while gas is flowing, eliminating the need for reengineering. The process does not require street trenching, the traditional manner of laying fiber.
OFS' DuctSaver FX cable is an all-dielectric fiber cable designed to run in utility lines, existing city ducts and gas lines that has been used the US and in Europe. OFS said the 48-fiber count cable design allows for a higher fiber density in a smaller space, increasing the capacity of rights-of-way.
