FDA Okays Palomar Laser for Skin Resurfacing

BURLINGTON, Mass., April 9 -- Palomar Medical Technologies Inc. has received clearance from the FDA for skin resurfacing for its Q-YAG 59 Nd:YAG Laser System.

Palomar said laser skin resurfacing is a skin rejuvenation technique in which light energy is used to remove a superficial layer of the skin and stimulate collagen production in the deeper layers. The Palomar Q-YAG 5 System includes a dual, blendable wavelength beam of 1064 nm and 532 nm. Laser resurfacing, which is designed to smooth out wrinkles, frown lines and acne scars, is performed in a clinical setting.

Palomar and the Gillette Co. announced in February an agreement to jointly develop and market a home-use, laser-based hair removal device.
