Honeywell Licenses LCD Patents to NEC

MORRIS TOWNSHIP, N.J., April 11 --Honeywell announced today it has granted a license to NEC Electronics enabling NEC Electronics and NEC Corp. to use two Honeywell US patents relating to liquid crystal displays (LCDs). Financial terms were not disclosed.

The patented technologies reduce screen flicker and drive the grey scale of the pixels, or dots, that form the images displayed on the screen. The technologies are widely used in LCD applications, including desktop PC monitors and notebook computers.

"This agreement enables NEC Electronics and Honeywell to benefit from years of pioneering research by Honeywell's aerospace business on LCD technology for aircraft cockpit displays," said Michael Ward, Honeywell vice president of licensing.

Under the agreement, NEC Electronics is granted nonexclusive, worldwide rights to use the Honeywell LCD technologies. These technologies are covered by US patents 5,061,920 and 5,041,823 and their foreign counterparts.

NEC Electronics provides LCD drivers and modules to manufacturers of display products. NEC Corp., the parent company of NEC Electronics, is a major supplier of personal computer monitors under its own trademark. NEC spun out its LCD display business on April 1.
