AU Optronics, Universal Display to Demo OLED Device
TAIPEI, Taiwan & EWING, N.J., May 8 -- AU Optronics Corp. has fabricated a low-power consumption, full-color active matrix organic light-emitting device (AMOLED) display combining its proprietary amorphous silicon (a-Si), thin-film transistor (TFT) backplane technology with Universal Display Corp.'s phosphorescent OLED (PHOLED) technology. The companies will demonstrate the display and present a joint scientific paper about the advance at the Society for Information Display International Symposium, to be held May 20-23 in Baltimore, Md.
The companies said Universal Display's PHOLED technology can provide superior performance and power efficiency over conventional fluorescent OLED materials.
"The successful demonstration of the full-color a-Si TFT AMOLED has opened up the possibility of using a-Si TFT as an OLED backplane in manufacturing AMOLEDs," said Po-Yen Lu, executive vice president of AU Optronics. "Together with higher efficiency OLED materials, like phosphorescent materials developed by Universal Display Corp., the technology can be very competitive."
