Analogic Acquires Interest in PhotoDetection Systems

PEABODY, Mass., May 23 -- Analogic Corp. announced it has acquired a minority interest in PhotoDetection Systems Inc., of Acton, and has obtained an exclusive technology license to use PhotoDetection System's proprietary positron emission tomography (PET) technology in specific markets. Terms of the investment were not disclosed.

Privately held PhotoDetection Systems Inc. (PDS), founded at Boston University's Photonics Center in 1998, has developed proprietary detection systems for high-performance PET, a diagnostic imaging method used in the diagnosis and management of cancer, specifically to detect early-stage tumors and determining tissue characteristics before and after treatment. Analogic makes health and security systems that use technology such as computer tomography (CT), digital radiography, ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging.

Bernard M. Gordon, chairman and CEO of Analogic, said, "Combining our respective proprietary technologies, Analogic and PhotoDetection Systems have the ability to provide superior, innovative PET/CT systems for our original equipment manufacturer customers."

Analogic said its CT technology dramatically improves the sensitivity of PET images, at a lower cost.
Paul Domigan, president and CEO of PhotoDetection Systems, said, "Low-cost PET/CT products will enable more clinicians to detect smaller lesions earlier, thereby improving the survival rates of many patients."
