DMG Technologies Acquires Demeter Module Group

LOS ANGELES, August 5 -- DMG Technologies Inc., a developer of optical subassemblies including laser/PIN diodes, detectors and bidirectional and combiner devices, has acquired the assets and intellectual property rights of Demeter Technologies' module group from Finisar Corp. The purchase was privately funded.

Finisar, a 10 Gb/s module specialist in Sunnyvale, bought privately held Genoa Inc. in April, closed its Demeter Technologies Inc. division, in El Monte, Calif., and consolidated device development and manufacturing into the Genoa facility in Fremont. Genoa developed novel linear semiconductor optical amplifiers for amplifying dense wavelength division multiplexing wavelengths for both metro and telecom applications. Demeter manufactured lasers and photodetectors for use in Finisar products.

DMG Technologies is located in an 11,000-square-foot cleanroom facility in Industry, Calif., under the direction of Malcolm McLean, president and CEO. McLean was formerly director of sales and marketing at thin-film manufacturer Auxora Inc. Prior to that, he was vice president of worldwide sales for Lyte Optronics, a manufacturer of visible laser components.

McLean said, "DMG already has added new supply agreements to the stable customer base that was in place at the time of purchase. We continue to provide technical, engineering and service support for existing product lines."

He said DMG has "an aggressive new product road map" to address needs in a number of industries including sensors, biomedicine, spectroscopy and government, as well as telecomm and datacomm.
