VTR Optoelectronics Suspends Operations

SANTA BARBARA, Calif., August 6 -- VTR Optoelectronics Inc., a Santa Barbara, Calif.-based manufacturer of high-end fiber optic receivers, announced it has suspended its operations as of August 4.

The company said the decision to suspend operations is consistent with the current strategy of Walsin Lihwa, its Taiwan-based parent company.

"Walsin Lihwa has decided to place more emphasis on its business interests in mainland China and has been disappointed with the sluggish recovery of the telecommunications markets elsewhere," said VTR Optoelectronics President Robert A. Craven.

Originally founded in 1995 as Terabit Technologies, VTR was purchased by Ciena Corp. in 1998. As a division of Ciena, it conducted a research program focusing on the development of high-speed avalanche photodetectors (APDs) and pin photodetectors. It was acquired by Walsin Lihwa in March 2002.
