Ruling Protects Fresnel Lens Patent

FORT WORTH, Texas, Oct. 16 -- Security system component supplier Rokonet Industries USA Inc. infringed Fresnel Technologies Inc.’s US patent RE 35,534, said the US District Court for the Northern District of Texas, Fort Worth Division, in a ruling last week.
Fresnel Technologies, based in Fort Worth, develops optics for passive infrared motion detectors. US Patent RE 35,534 covers its LODIFF lens, a Fresnel lens made with a constant groove depth and with grooves that follow an aspheric contour. The lens is used in passive infrared motion sensors for security systems and convenience lighting and in noncontact thermometers.

Rokonet was also found to have willfully infringed the patent, leading to enhanced damages, and Fresnel Technologies was awarded attorney fees and costs, according to the company. The court also issued an injunction prohibiting further infringement of Fresnel Technologies' patent.
