Sprint to Cut 2000 Jobs

OVERLAND PARK, Kansas, Nov. 24 -- Sprint announced today it will cut 2000 jobs in its attempt to cut costs. The employees affected work in organizations at locations across the enterprise, including the business and consumer wireline and wireless groups, the local telephone operation, technology services and corporate staff support groups. These reductions are in addition to previously announced outsourcing actions in the company's Information Technology organization.

Sprint said its new organizational structure, which goes into effect Jan. 1, will help it focus on two distinct market segments, businesses and consumers. In September, Sprint announced it would reduce total operating expenses by 5 to 7 percent over the next three years through restrucruting.

Employees whose positions are eliminated will be eligible for two weeks' pay and benefits for each full year of service, up to a maximum of 52 weeks. All affected employees will receive a minimum of 60 days pay following notice and will receive outplacement assistance, Sprint said.
