Optics Center Director Harvey Pollicove Dies

ROCHESTER, N.Y., Jan. 29 -- Harvey Pollicove, the director of the Center of Optics Manufacturing (COM) at and a graduate of the University of Rochester, died suddenly Jan. 25 at the age of 60.

Pollicove was posthumously awarded the Distinction in Photonics Award from Laurin Publishing's Photonics Spectra magazine on Jan. 26, at a ceremony held in conjunction with Photonics West. The award is given to an individual whose service to the industry over the years has contributed to its growth and prosperity.

Before overseeing the development of COM, he was technical markets manager for Eastman Kodak's Optical Products Division. He was employed by Kodak for more than 28 years and played a critical role in the development of modern optics manufacturing technology. He was also on the board of directors at Edmund Optics Inc.

Pollicove was an active member of SPIE in the area of optical manufacturing and fabrication, and most recently chaired Optifab 2003 last May.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine, and daughters, Carolyn and Sarah.
