Circle of Excellence Award: JDS Uniphase Light Engine

SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 27 -- JDS Uniphase was a recipient of Laurin Publishing's Photonics 2003 Circle of Excellence Award for its liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCoS) version of its light engine for microdisplay rear-projection televisions (RPTVs).

The JDS Uniphase LCoS light engine does not rely on glass polarizing beamsplitters or stretched films for the separation of color and polarization states, ensuring there is effectively no inadvertent cross-talk between the desired and unwanted polarization states. Its strong color and polarization management of the JDS Uniphase LCoS light engine allow display manufacturers to produce high-contrast, high-uniformity images. The light engine produces uniform white and dark states, 13,000:1 sequential contrast without panels and nearly perfect color uniformity. With panels, the light engine has achieved sequential contrast in excess of 2500:1.

Several RPTV and original equipment manufacturers featured JDS Uniphase LCoS and digital light processing (DLPTM) light engines in their products at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in January. Brillian Corp. announced at the show that it had selected the light engine for its LCoS-based 720p high-definition television.
