OCP Cites Gains In Long Wavelength VCSELs

WOODLAND HILLS, Calif., Feb. 24, 2004--Optical Communication Products Inc. said today that their 1.3 micron Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) development program has successfully accomplished several key performance and reliability milestones.

"Results of long wavelength VCSEL performance have been reported by many companies around the world," said Muoi Van Tran, OCP's chairman and CEO. "However, to ensure the successful commercialization of long wavelength VCSELs, two key issues have to be addressed: manufacturability and reliability. Since our acquisition of the assets and intellectual property of Cielo Communications in October 2002, OCP has devoted much effort in this area."

Tran said that OCP's 1.3 micron VCSELs have a typical peak power output of 3mW at room temperature and 1.2mW at 90 degrees C. These results are routinely achieved and have been reproduced across numerous wafers. In addition, operating temperature range of up to +130 degrees Celsius has been demonstrated.

OCP has also been performing a rigorous reliability program for this 1.3 micron VCSEL device. A median life for wear out of 1.5 million hours (170 years) at 40 degrees C and a mean time to failure of 25 million hours (2,850 years) at 40 degrees C have been achieved.
