Motorola to Acquire Quantum Bridge

HORSHAM, Pa., March 30 -- Quantum Bridge Communications Inc., an Andover, Mass.-based maker of broadband telecommunications equipment, has agreed to be bought by Motorola Inc. in an all-cash transaction, the companies announced today. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Motorola will add Quantum Bridge's optical networking systems to its division that sells equipment to cable television operators.

The Boston Globe reported today that Motorola's cable unit, based in Horsham, Pa., has no immediate plans to relocate Quantum Bridge employees, and the company did not say how many of Quantum Bridge's 70 employees will get jobs at Motorola.

Quantum Bridge is the fourth Boston-area company acquired by Motorola since 2000. A year ago, Motorola bought Winphoria Networks, a Tewksbury wireless network equipment maker, for an undisclosed sum. It also bought a cable broadband switch maker, RiverDelta Networks of Tewksbury, for $300 million in stock in July 2001, and C-Port, a North Andover networking equipment chip maker, for $450 million in stock in February 2000.
