OHB-System and ELOP Start Joint Venture

BREMEN, Germany and HAIFA, Israel, May 12 -- Bremen-based space company OHB-System AG and Elop Electro-Optics Industries Ltd. -- a subsidiary of Elbit Systems Ltd., a defense technology company based in Haifa, Israel -- have announced plans to start a joint venture to develop electro-optical systems and infrared payloads for deployment in space and unmanned airborne vehicles. OHB-System AG is part of the European OHB Technology AG group, which develops technology related to small satellites, manned space flight, orbital and transport systems and security and reconnaissance.

The new venture, OHB ELectroOPtics, will be based in Bremen and will initially focus on marketing in the European region.

Electro-optical sensors make use of the visible and infrared areas of the electromagnetic spectrum and can generate images with resolutions from less than one meter to several kilometers. Electro-optical systems are currently in use both in civilian satellites such as BIRD, EROS, ENVISAT and IKONOS, in meteorological satellites such as the European METEOSAT and in military reconnaissance platforms.
