Schott Scientific Glass Plant to Close

ELMSFORD, N.Y., July 28 -- Schott Corp. has announced the schedule for the closing of operations at Schott Scientific Glass Inc., in Parkersburg, W.V. The first melting tank was shut down on July 22, and the second tank will be shut down on August 12. The facility will end operations by August 31 and will remain open only for cleaning.

Schott Scientific Glass Inc., with 190 employees, produced borosilicate glass tubing for pharmaceutical packaging and industrial applications. Due to an overcapacity in the North American tubing market, a tentative closing of the Parkersburg facility was announced in October 2003. On June 25, 2004, an agreement regarding the definitive shut down of operations was reached with the union representing the plant.

Schott Scientific Glass Inc.’s customers will be supplied from Schott production in Germany, Brazil and Spain. Marketing, sales and logistics for Schott’s North American tubing business will remain in Elmsford, N.Y.
