OptoLum Inc., a Phoenix, Ariz., developer of solid-state lighting, announced it has been awarded a patent (US Patent 6,815,724) that extends the coverage of its original core patent on thermal management of LEDs (US patent 6,573,536) to include intelligent control and monitoring technology for LEDs utilizing heat sinks in both active and passive systems. The original patent covered one or more LEDs attached to an elongate heat sink and various production methods, including LED lighting systems using channels and extrusions of thermally conductive materials such as aluminum and copper for cooling.
