Cleveland Crystals Inc., an Ohio maker of crystals and precision electro-optical devices, announced it has supplied a large quantity of ADP (ammonium dihydrogen phosphate) and KDP (potassium dihydrogenphosphate) crystals for a Lyot filter that will be used in the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) instrument on NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory satellite, expected to be launched in April 2008. The HMI instrument will investigate the solar interior using tools of helioseismology, the study of wave oscillations in the sun. The Lockheed Martin Solar and Astrophysics Laboratory is building the HMI in collaboration with Stanford University's Hansen Experimental Physics Laboratory.    . . .   CorActive, a Quebec manufacturer of optical fiber products, announced it has shipped a 140-µm confined core ytterbium-doped double-clad fiber, one of the largest-core ytterbium-doped double-clad fibers available.    . . .    LG.Philips LCD Co. Ltd., a Seoul, Korea-based TFT-LCD (thin-film transistor/liquid crystal display) manufacturer, has announced a joint venture with Nippon Electric Glass to build a glass polishing and processing facility outside of Seoul, in the Paju display cluster, which will also be the site of LG.Philips LCD's recently announced "P7" TFT LC fabrication facility. The joint venture company, to be named Paju Electric Glass Co. Ltd., will be funded with an initial investment of KRW 36 billion (about $3.5 million). LG.Philips LCD will own a 40-percent equity position in the new company. Paju Electric Glass will source glass substrates from Nippon's plant in Japan; the output will be used at LG.Philips LCD's Paju manufacturing facilities.
