James Reeves was named vice president of marketing and business development at AOptix Technologies, a Campbell, Calif., supplier of electo-optical systems and technologies for communications, surveillance and security systems in government and commercial markets. He was formerly a director of business development at Northrop Grumman Corp. and previously held executive positions at Celerity Systems, a division of L-3 Communications, and was president of Tecom Industries Inc.    . . .    Clarient Inc. and Applied Imaging Corp. reached a settlement ending their litigation over alleged patent infringement, unfair competition and misappropriation of trade secrets. Under the terms of the settlement, the companies granted each other nonexclusive, worldwide licenses allowing use of their respective brightfield and fluorescent microscopy patent portfolios for pathology applications. Clarient will assume nonexclusive distribution rights to Applied Imaging's flagship Ariol pathology workstation for select applications in drug discovery and development.    . . .    Bothell, Wash.-based Lumera Corp., which makes molecular structures and polymer compounds for electro-optic, bioscience, radio frequency and specialty nanotechnology applications, announced it was recently awarded its fifth US patent (6,864,375, "Highly stable and efficient nonlinear optical chromophores for electro-optic polymers"), for a method to enhance the light stability of electro-optic polymers. Organic chromophores are the key constituents of electro-optic polymers, which typically are used in fiber optic networks, hybrid fiber optic-wireless networks and phased array radars.
