Tony Pirera, president of Spectrum Thin Films Inc., a Bohemia, N.Y.-based manufacturer of optics and optical coatings, operates a hydrogen-alpha, .6-angstrom bandpass solar telescope by Astro Optical Systems. Solar flares and surface details on the sun can be seen only with this type of instrument.
