Cognex Corp., a Natick, Mass., supplier of machine vision systems, announced that Erdemir Steel, the largest iron and steel producer in Turkey, has purchased five Cognex SmartView systems to perform quality inspection at its cold-rolled steel mill in Eregli, Turkey. Erdemir will use the SmartView systems to detect and classify defects such as scratches, dents and roll marks on the surface of steel as it undergoes various finishing processes, including continuous annealing, galvanizing, pickling and tinning. Installation of all five systems is expected to be complete by the end of June. . . . PerkinElmer Inc., of Wellesley, Mass., and Waters Corp., of Milton, have announced a long-term collaboration to deliver and support advanced newborn screening systems, combining Waters' mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography instruments and control software with PerkinElmer's laboratory information management software. PerkinElmer will be the exclusive distributor of Waters' Quattro micro and Quattro Premier tandem quadrupole mass spectrometers and Alliance HPLC system for neonatal screening applications; it will market the co-branded products to clinical laboratories.
