Citynet Deploys Infinera Digital Optical Networking Platform

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Aug. 8 -- Infinera Corp. announced that Bridgeport, W.Va.,-based Citynet, a provider of communications services to markets in the mid-Atlantic and Midwest, has deployed Infinera's digital optical networking platform on a significant portion of its network after completing a nine-month lab and field trial of Infinera's hardware, software and electronic manufacturing services components.

Citynet selected Infinera because of the strategic advantages offered by Infinera's digital optical networking technology, such as the capability to offer new services like 10 Gigabit Ethernet. The Infinera DTN gives carriers and other network-builders digital control of optical networking functions such as adding and dropping customer traffic, managing bandwidth, monitoring performance and eliminating noise and optical impairments.

Incorporating Infinera's photonic integrated circuit (PIC) technology, the Infinera DTNs provide dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) and digital bandwidth management capabilities and will support the increased demand Citynet is seeing for optical wavelength (2.5 to 10 Gbps), private line (DS3, OC192 and Ethernet) and IP-based service offerings. Infinera's PICs convert all optical traffic at a given location into electronic signals, which can then be digitally processed.
