OSA Annual, Frontiers in Optics, Laser Science to Converge in Tucson

WASHINGTON, Aug. 17 -- The Optical Society of America (OSA) 89th annual meeting, Frontiers in Optics 2005 and Laser Science XXI will be held in conjunction Oct. 16-20 at the Hilton Tucson El Conquistador Golf and Tennis Resort, in Tucson, Ariz. The events will cover topics including laser science, nanophotonics and research and developments in optics and lasers.
   The Frontiers in Optics Exhibit, to be held Oct. 18 and 19, will feature 139 invited speakers, eight tutorials and 483 contributed papers, of which 140 will be presented in the poster sessions. It will offer attendees a first glimpse of the latest optical technologies and products from participating optics companies. The OSA annual meeting and Laser Science XXI, the annual meeting of the Division of Laser Science of the American Physical Society will also be held that week.
   Laser Science XXI meeting is a forum for the latest work on laser applications and development, spanning a wide variety of topics in physics, biology and chemistry. It will feature 52 invited speakers, two tutorials and 60 contributed papers, including 21 poster presentations.
   Symposium topics will include scientific and technical advances in optics, and OSA division chairs will present trends in their areas of expertise. A symposium on the future of optics and photonics research will feature representatives from government funding agencies.
   The Frontiers in Optics/Laser Science joint plenary and awards session will include five speakers: Stan Whitcomb of the California Institute of Technology, on "Celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Einstein's Seminal Relativity Paper"; Ferenc Krausz of the Max-Planck-Institut für Quantenoptik and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat in München, Germany, on "Controlling and Measuring Processes on an Attosecond Time Scale"; and Martin Tomasko of the University of Arizona, "The Descent Imager/Spectral Radiometer Experiment on the Huygens Probe of Titan: A New View of a New World." Theodor W. Hansch of the Max-Planck Institute of Quantum Optics will give the Ives Medal address on "A Passion for Precision"; and Marlan O. Scully of Texas A&M University will present the APS Shawlow Prize Lecture, "Quantum Theory of Laser, Bose Condensates and Black Hole Radiation."
   A symposium tribute to Nicolaas Bloembergen will feature the 1981 Nobel Laureate in physics and honorary professor of optical sciences at the University of Arizona giving a "Historic Overview of Femtosecond Pulses." Guest speakers are Eric Mazur of Harvard University, speaking on "Nonlinear Optics on the Nanoscale"; Eli Yablonovitch of the University of California, Los Angeles, "Photonic Crystals and Nanophotonics"; and Y. Ron Shen of the University of California, Berkeley, "Phase-Sensitive Sum-Frequency Surface Spectroscopy."
