New World Network to Expand

MIAMI, Sept. 13 -- New World Network, the principal owner of the America's Region Caribbean Optical-ring System (ARCOS), has announced multimillion-dollar expansion plans following the sale of the company to Columbus Communications Inc.

Paul W. Scott was named the new president and COO of New World Network, which will retain its name. Scott was formerly president and COO of Caribbean Crossings Ltd. and FibraLink Jamaica Ltd.; Barbados-basedColumbus Communications owns the controlling interest in both companies.

New World said it will use financial backing from Columbus Communications and its banking partners to nearly double the capacity on the ARCOS ring, to improve its undersea cable network and to expand coverage into new countries.

Columbus also has controlling interests in a number of telecommunication and broadband providers in the Caribbean, including Cable Bahamas Ltd., which provides cable television and high speed broadband services in the Bahamas; Caribbean Crossings, a Cable Bahamas subsidiary that operates a 1000-kilometer sub-sea fiber optic cable system linking the Bahamas and the US; Merit Communications Ltd., a broadband data communications provider in Jamaica; FibraLink Jamaica, which is constructing a sub-sea fiber optic cable network connecting Jamaica and the US, and Cable Company of Trinidad and Tobago, which provides cable television and broadband access services.
