Daily News Briefs
Positron Systems Inc., a Pocatello, Idaho-based provider of nondestructive and material characterization testing, announced it will be granted a US patent by Oct. 6 for its induced positron annihilation volumetric (IPA-V) technology. The IPA process involves penetrating materials with a photon beam generated by a small linear accelerator or other techniques to create positrons, which are attracted to nanosized defects in the material. The collision of positrons and electrons in the material releases gamma rays, creating a readable signature of the defects or damage in materials, including metals, polymers, ceramics and composites, at the atomic level. IPA-V assesses damage up to 4 in. deep and has applications for component inspections and health monitoring, remaining component life assessment and inspection compliance in aerospace, power generation and other markets.
. . . Super Vision International Inc. of Orlando, Fla., a maker of LED and fiber optic lighting systems, announced that the US District Court for the District of Massachusetts dismissed its patent infringement complaint against
Color Kinetics Inc. of Boston, in which Super Vision sued Color Kinetics for infringement of a variable color lighting system patent Super Vision acquired from lighting system maker High End Systems Inc. of Austin, Texas. The patent deals with the use of color-changing lighting systems using pulse-width modulation and variable digital control circuitry to vary the intensity of individual lamp elements to generate unlimited colors. Instead of appealing the decision, Super Vision says it intends to file another suit against Color Kinetics.
. . . Cypress Semiconductor Corp. is marking its 10th anniversary in Bangalore, India, by announcing plans to develop a $10 million campus there for strategic product design. The company expects to triple its current India workforce of 200 over the next few years to support this initiative.
