Alcatel Sponsoring 'EuroVisions' Exhibition

PARIS, Sept. 29 -- The perspectives of 10 photographers on the newly integrated countries of the European Union are the subjects of "Euro Visions -- the New Europeans by Magnum Photographers," an exhibition being sponsored by Alcatel through Oct. 15 at the Pompidou Centre in Paris.

The exhibition is part of the Photography Months project recently launched by eight European capitals (Paris, Berlin, Moscow, Rome, Vienna, Bratislava, Luxembourg and Warsaw) to promote contemporary European photography. It was the result of a proposal from Magnum Photos, a global photographic cooperative, to present a photographic assignment on the theme of "the new Europeans" from countries that joined the European Union on May 1, 2004: Cyprus, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Slovenia. The artists were asked to explore one of these countries from their own points of view. EuroVision photographers are: Carl De Keyzer, Martine Franck, Alex Majoli, Peter Marlow, Martin Parr, Mark Power, Lise Sarfati, Chris Steele Perkins, Donovan Wylie and Patrick Zachmann.

Alcatel said the exhibition is intended to reinforce exchanges among Europeans about their lifestyles and cultures. It will be shown in the other capital cities in 2006.

Alcatel also announced it will sponsor a €10,000 prize for the European Month of Photography project.
