The development of space-based ultraviolet astronomy began with the missions of deep-space sonders like Voyager, which allowed preliminary determination of UV spectra of remote stars. However, these methods remained largely unexploited because of constraints in the size of instruments that 1970s and '80s aerospace technology could launch.
