Schafer Awarded Defense Contract

KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M., Oct. 5 -- Defense and biotechnology research and development company Schafer Corp., based in Chelmsford, Mass., was recently awarded a $17 million contract by the US Air Force to help develop the Department of Defense's high-energy laser weapons projects.

Schafer will provide engineering services over the next two years to the DoD's High-Energy Laser Joint Technology Office in Albuquerque, N.M., including science, engineering and administrative support to help identify promising research paths, initiate research programs, establish technical requirements and evaluate technical results. The contractor will also provide consultants, analyze program goals, develop concepts and alternative technical approaches, and plan requirements for new projects.

The High Energy Laser Joint Technology Office was established in 2000 to manage development of high-energy laser science and technology for defense organizations. Operating under an annual budget of approximately $65 million, it sponsors 80 programs in industry, academia and government agencies.
