Ethernet Alliance Formed

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Jan. 12, 2006 -- The Ethernet Alliance was created this week to "accelerate industry adoption and remove barriers to market entry by providing a cohesive, market-responsive, industry voice on IEEE 802 Ethernet projects," the group said.
Founding members of the Ethernet Alliance are Foundry Networks, 3Com, ADC, Agere Systems, AMCC, Aquantia, Broadcom, Force10 Networks, Intel, Lawrence Berkeley Labs, Pioneer Corp., Quake Technologies, Samsung, Sun Microsystems, Tehuti Networks, Tyco Electronics, The University of New Hampshire InterOperability Laboratory and Xilinx.
"The Ethernet Alliance and its members are dedicated to the continued success and expansion of Ethernet technology across many industries," said Brad Booth, alliance president.
Unlike past alliances that support single IEEE 802 Ethernet projects, the Ethernet Alliance will exist for as long as it remains relevant to IEEE 802 Ethernet technology, Booth said. Activities for 2006 will focus on three key areas: Ethernet technology incubation, interoperability demonstrations and education. To promote these, the Ethernet Alliance has started the incubation process for 100 Gigabit Ethernet, has initiated efforts to demonstrate 10GBASE-T, 10GBASE-LRM and backplane Ethernet interoperability, and is planning to show consumer electronic applications.
The alliance has also lined up speakers on key industry panels to help communicate benefits of Ethernet technology.
The Ethernet Alliance is open to all constituencies and stakeholders of IEEE 802 Ethernet. For more information, visit: www.ethernetalliance.org
