DRS IRT Demos Focal Plane Array

DALLAS, Feb. 15 -- DRS Infrared Technologies LP (DRS IRT), a unit of DRS Technologies Inc., said it recently demonstrated what it claims is the smallest pixel-size infrared focal plane array of its type. The demonstration concluded the year-long development of the 12-µm 640- by 480-pixel FPA with sensitivity in the mid-wavelength infrared spectral band.
DRS said it created the ultrasmall pixel-size focal plane array (FRT) using its high-density vertically integrated photodiode detector fabrication processes, which allows for an increase in the operating temperature of an FPA from the industry standard of 77 to 120K, reducing the cooling power needed to operate one.
DRS's FPA is part of a broader effort by DRS Technologies to develop IR sensors and systems for the US military and Department of Homeland Security.
"As the first infrared device created at this pitch for military use, the reduction in pixel size parallels the commercial roadmap for visible imagers, where reduced pixel size has led to camera miniaturization, larger sensor array formats and lower cost," DRS said in a press release. "Small infrared systems of reduced weight and size are critically important to improved operational performance on the battlefield and support the Department of Defense's information superiority objectives. Many emerging needs, such as small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for surveillance and man-portable long-range thermal viewers, now can be addressed."
DRS said it plans to release a high-definition TV 1280- by 720-pixel format FPA in early 2007. The company is exhibiting at the Association of the US Army (AUSA) 2006 Winter Symposium and Exhibition, being held this week in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
