Lucent Receives $94M From US Army to Build Broadband Network in Europe

MURRAY HILL, N.J., March 13, 2006 -- Lucent Technologies announced it has been awarded a contract valued at up to $94 million by the US Army to implement its European Dense Wave Division Multiplex Optical Transport Network (DWDM-OTN) project.

Under the firm fixed-price indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contract, the Lucent team will provide network integration services and optical equipment and software to create a multicountry US Army high-speed optical transport network. The contract has a two-year base period with three additional one-year option periods.

"This prime contract is one of the most significant network integration and optical wins for Lucent in the government space," said Rick Miller, president of Government Solutions at Lucent. The project includes the planning and deployment of multiple protected DWDM rings in Germany along with additional rings for a number of other sites in Europe including the Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg region and Italy.

One of the key products included in the award is Lucent's Metropolis wavelength services manager (WSM). Metropolis WSM is one of a new generation of wavelength division multiplexing systems that support up to 40 protected wavelengths and helps customers meet their wavelength needs in the metropolitan and regional application spaces. According to Lucent, the modular and flexible architecture of the product will help the Army reduce cost and complexity through a common optical platform that offers DWDM, coarse wavelength division multiplexing (CWDM) and reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers (ROADMs) technologies. Because it supports a variety of data transport methods, the platform will help the Army reduce capital and operational costs and simplify its networks, making them easier to manage and troubleshoot. The Metropolis WSM ROADM will allow the Army to remotely reconfigure its network, adding services as end-user demand necessitates.
