Prima Luci to Sell All Patents

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., March 17, 2006 -- Prima Luci Inc. ('First Light'), an optical and photonic component designer, announced yesterday that it will sell off its intellectual property portfolio of seven patents -- including a method to redirect light pulses through fiber optic strands that the company says is as much as 10,000 times faster that other technologies -- and 19 patents pending.

"Prima Luci will wind down its operations to fulfill our corporate exit strategy for the shareholders" after it sells the portfolio, company Co-founder and Chairman Frank Coloccia said. "We have accomplished what we set out to do, which was to amass an unprecedented patent portfolio that impacts the optical and photonics industries. Our impressive patents cover breakthroughs in true optical transmission that are unmatched by any other known technology in the world."

He said Prima Luci has patented a method to redirect light pulses flowing through fiber optic strands in a way that allows system manufactures and carriers to realize substantial savings in capital expenditures (above 90 percent), as well as operational expenditures, "all while achieving speeds that are up to 10,000 times faster that other technologies."

Prima Luci's technologies can be used in very short-range communications (chip-to-chip) as well as for ultralong-haul requirements. They include: ultrafast 1x2 switches, wavelength converters, dispersion compensators, secured PONs, SNR enhancers, ultrafast modulators, optical packet router, optical packet OXC, optical packet add/drop and optical logic gates. "These optical components will enable (the buyer's) customers to use fewer fibers, at higher rates and at substantially lower costs, Coloccia said.

"We are the first and only company that has patented the 'photonic transistor,' which does not require light pulses to be converted, altered or buffered in any way, and uses the light's own properties to control itself intelligently," Coloccia said. On its website, Prima Luci states that this technological breakthrough has been called the "optical Holy Grail" by several researchers and analysts, and will allow whomever acquires the patent to "jumpstart their R&D by at least five years."

Although he said he can't disclose the identities of potential buyers, "We currently have several mid-single-digit million-dollar offers on the table, and the board of directors will be making a decision in the near future," Coloccia said.
