Rofin-Sinar Buys Stake in H2B Photonics

PLYMOUTH, Mich. and HAMBURG, Germany, March 23, 2006 -- Rofin-Sinar Technologies Inc., a maker of industrial lasers, announced today it has acquired a 40-percent stake in H2B Photonics GmbH of Garbsen, Germany. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
H2B Photonics makes laser-based systems used to cut brittle materials, such as glass, and holds worldwide license rights on the multiple laser beam absorption (MLBA) process. The systems are used primarily for displays like plasma screens, windows, automotive parts and hollowware (a type of tableware).
The company was founded in 2005 as a spinoff of laser research institute Laser Zentrum Hannover (LZH) of Hanover, Germany. H2B Photonics will continue as an independent company within the Rofin Group. Its founders, Michael Haase, Oliver Haupt and Carsten Busching, will remain its managing directors and will hold the other 60 percent of the company's shares.
Rofin-Sinar has headquarters in Plymouth, Mich., and Hamburg, Germany, with production facilities in the US, Germany, UK, Sweden, Singapore and Japan.
