Dalsa to Make Dental X-ray Image Sensors

Dalsa Corp. announced it has received a contract to develop and supply CMOS image sensor chips for a manufacturer of dental x-ray equipment.

The contract, which is expected to be completed over the next 12 months, is valued at CDN $1.5 million (about $1.3 million) and has the potential for significant follow-on volume, Dalsa said. It said this is the fourth similar contract from life sciences imaging customers it has received in the last eight months.

Dalsa said the chips, which will be "eyes" of a customer's dental x-ray imaging system, will allow the system to capture more detail with higher contrast and lower radiation doses and will make the x-ray process more comfortable for patients.

Dalsa CEO Savvas Chamberlain said, "The rapid transition from film-based imaging to digital imaging in the life sciences marketplace is driving growth in our digital imaging business."

In addition to image sensor components, Dalsa produces electronic digital cameras; vision processors; image processing software; and semiconductor wafer foundry services for use in microelectromechanical systems, high-voltage semiconductors, image sensors and mixed-signal CMOS chips.
