OIDA Presents Plans for High-Brightness LED Technology

Michael Lebby, president and CEO of the Optoelectronics Industry Development Association (OIDA), discussed the organization’s vision for high-brightness LED technology in a speech delivered in February at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. His talk detailed OIDA’s views on global technology and market trends in optoelectronic applications, such as broadband, nanophotonics, laser diodes, solar cells, image sensors, optical networking, data communications and 40-Gb/s components and systems.

Lebby predicted that the performance of white LEDs will approach 200 lm/W over the next 10 years and that research designs will be quickly commercialized. He also spoke about OIDA’s technology road map forums this year, including one on nitride-based optoelectronic devices that is scheduled for May 11 in Palo Alto, Calif.
