Photon Control Awarded Fiber-Optic Sensing Patent

Photonic sensor developer Photon Control Inc. of Burnaby, British Columbia, announced it has been granted US Patent No. 7,099,015 for fiber-optic sensing. The patent protects interferometric technology for sensing physical parameters, such as pressure and temperature. Photon said it will use the patent in instrumentation for heavy oil production (downhole pressure and temperature monitoring), and sensing for the power industry, among other applications. Photon's interferometric technology is based on white-light interferometry, a method which requires sending a wide spectrum of light (white light) through the fiber to sense the gap spacing of the Fabry-Perot cavity at the end of the fiber. Signal demodulation is provided by fiber-optic spectrometers that Photon developed independently.
